If almost five months of Animal Cross New Horizons hype is not evidence enough, Nintendo has confirmed its overwhelming success by releasing its latest financial results. The hit title has now sold over 22 million copies world wide. To put that titanic number into perspective, it has sold more copies than the entirety of the Metroid franchise.
What is even more surprising, thanks to some hardcore number crunching by Game Data Library, they have revealed it is also the second best-selling game ever, within Japan.
The only game that surpasses Animal Crossing’s monumental success is the original Pokémon Red/Blue/Green which sold over 10 million. That of course is three combined totals, so realistically, New Horizons’ is the best selling single entry. It has even outsold the original Super Mario Bros, which is a seriously impressive feat for only being on the market for four months.
